In almost every small business there is a task somebody does by hand every week because that is how it has always been done. A spreadsheet retyped, a report assembled from three sources, a list emailed over and then keyed in again somewhere else.
I start by watching how the work actually happens, not how it is supposed to happen. Then I build the smallest tool that solves the problem: an internal page, a form, a dashboard, a button that does the thing. Not a platform, not a six-month project.
The tool is yours, it is documented, and it is simple enough that somebody else could pick it up. I would rather ship something small and useful than something large and impressive.

Most small tools ship in one to three weeks, with something usable in your hands from week one.
